About
The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to creating safe and stable homes and families by championing equal justice. AVLF firmly believes that no one should have to navigate legal challenges alone, especially when standing up for their rights.
AVLF offers a comprehensive suite of free legal services to qualified individuals across Atlanta. Their core areas of focus include:
- Domestic Violence / Intimate Partner Abuse: Providing crucial free legal assistance to survivors, including help with filing Temporary Protective Orders (TPOs) and connecting them with essential safety and stability resources. The Safe Families Office and Standing With Survivors programs are key to this effort.
- Landlord / Tenant Problems: Offering free legal aid to fight against poor living conditions, recover unreturned security deposits, and challenge illegal evictions. Programs like Eviction Defense, the Housing Court Assistance Center (HCAC), Standing With Our Neighbors (SWON)®, and the Saturday Lawyer Program (SLP) are instrumental in protecting tenants' rights. The Saturday Lawyer Program, a volunteer-powered initiative, provides free legal advice and representation for issues such as illegal evictions, uninhabitable conditions, improperly withheld security deposits, and unfair lease practices.
- Family Law Matters: Through their Family Law Program, AVLF provides compassionate and experienced legal support at no cost to survivors of intimate partner abuse and families involved in high-conflict custody disputes. This includes representation in divorce proceedings, child custody, child support, spousal support, and legitimation. Eligibility for family law assistance is specifically for individuals who have received help through AVLF's intimate partner abuse programs, such as the Safe Families Office or the TPO process.
AVLF's commitment extends through various specialized programs like the Medical Legal Partnership Plus (MLP+), Community Support & Prevention (CSP), and Dollars for Judgments, which connects creditors’ rights attorneys with low-income clients to help them recover owed judgments. With a strong network of dedicated volunteers, AVLF continues to make a significant impact, assisting thousands of clients annually and contributing thousands of pro bono hours to the community. For assistance, you can contact AVLF at (404) 521-0790 or visit their office at 352 University Avenue Southwest n118, Atlanta, GA 30310.
