About
The Georgia Department of Law, under the leadership of Attorney General Chris Carr, serves a critical role in upholding justice and protecting the citizens of Georgia. This esteemed office is primarily responsible for providing comprehensive legal representation to the executive branch of the state government and vigorously prosecuting violent crimes across Georgia. Attorney General Carr's mission is steadfast: to safeguard the lives, livelihoods, and liberties of all Georgians through proactive legal action and robust enforcement.
The Department of Law is at the forefront of addressing some of the state's most pressing challenges. Key areas of focus include:
- Human Trafficking: The pioneering Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, established in 2019, has achieved significant success, rescuing and assisting over 200 children and securing substantial prison sentences for traffickers.
- Gang Activity: Building on this model, the statewide Gang Prosecution Unit, created in 2022, has already secured more than 120 convictions, actively working to dismantle criminal organizations.
- Organized Retail Crime: Launched in 2024, the Organized Retail Crime Unit investigates and prosecutes large-scale theft rings impacting retailers statewide.
- Cybercrime and Elder Abuse: The office actively combats these modern threats, protecting vulnerable populations and digital infrastructure.
- Opioid Abuse: Through the Statewide Opioid Task Force, which includes over 300 public and private entities, the Department has secured more than one billion dollars for state and local governments to expand critical treatment, prevention, and recovery services.
Beyond criminal prosecution, the Department also houses a dedicated Consumer Protection Division, where citizens can file complaints regarding unfair or deceptive business practices. The office is committed to transparency and accessibility, providing clear channels for public engagement and service of process. Located at 40 Capitol Square, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, the Georgia Department of Law stands as a pillar of legal integrity and public service for the state.
