About

The Newton County Superior Court, part of the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, serves both Newton and Walton Counties, exercising broad civil and criminal jurisdiction. This court is responsible for presiding over all felony trials, has exclusive jurisdiction over divorces, and possesses the authority to correct errors made by limited jurisdiction courts. Superior Court judges are constitutional officers, elected to four-year terms in nonpartisan elections, and must meet specific age, legal practice, and residency requirements.

The court's offices and courtrooms are conveniently located within the Newton County Judicial Center at 1132 Usher Street, Covington, Georgia 30014. The Superior Courts and Judges’ Chambers are situated on the 2nd Floor, with the Law Library also on the same floor. The Clerk of Superior Courts and the District Attorney’s Office are on the 3rd Floor. The Judicial Center operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Attorneys appearing before the Superior Court are expected to speak with their clients prior to being called in front of a Judge to ensure efficient court proceedings. The court also has strict rules regarding electronic devices and courtroom conduct. Key rules include:

  • Electronic recording requires permission from the presiding judge.
  • Cell phones must be turned off before entering any courtroom and remain off.
  • Proper dress is required, prohibiting items like hats, shorts, mini skirts, tank tops, and undershirts.
  • Loud talking, profanity, and weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited within the courthouse.

The Clerk of Superior Court's office, in conjunction with the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA), offers services like the Filing Activity Notification System (FANS) and eCertification for requesting certified Court and Real Estate Records electronically 24/7. The Real Estate Division houses records dating back to 1821 and provides access to digital indexes for deeds, liens, plats, and notaries.
